I have the camera on the kitchen counter (on a rubber mat) and the target is outside, making the distance total 17 meters. I'm actually doing this measurement in/outside. One thing that stands out from your replies is that more than one person is mentioning light on the target. No need then to worry about shutter shake. Then just start taking images and see what the results are.Īfter the camera indicates focus I switch to LiveView and examine the test target in the magnified view. I usually manually change focus, then re-focus several times to see if the results are repeatable.Ĭhange your microadjustment as needed. Regardless of the distance from the target, the in-focus portion for both front and back should be the same at 300 mm wide open. Your line of sight should be fairly level with the target. It will be similar with the 5D mkIII.īy increasing the distance, it will be easier to see any deviation in front or back focus.Īt a distance of 42 meters, you will have one meter in focus in front and one meter in focus in back, with a correctly adjusted camera. With a 300 lens at f2.8 and 17 meters in distance from target, you should have an equal number of cans in focus for both the front and back of focus target. Then put an object in the center of the line of cans which will be easy to focus on. Does not have to be perfect to start with. Line the cans up at an approximate 45 degree angle in relation to the camera line of sight (center focus point). Make a line of objects, like beer cans spaced equally apart, at the appropriate distance from camera. When using extreme settings (+/-20) you can still have values all over the place, but the others are very very close together to give an excellent fit. I use a strong daylight lamp to light the target, since I found that this to be important for consistent results, to provide larger shutter speeds to prevent the influence of the mirror getting too large. The spread in these focusing points causes the curve fit to degrade from excellent/Good at the start towards Poor! What do you guys make of this? Have you got any ideas of what can cause these inconsistencies? What could be wrong with the lens to cause this?

Would really like to know if this seems like a lens issue or if this is normal for using a method like Focal. During this test I also see a high spread in the focus quality results. Inside Focal you can also do a focus consistency test. The spread in these focusing points causes the curve fit to degrade from excellent/Good at the start towards Poor! So, I'm suspecting my lens or something (a setting?) in Focal. I see this issue on both my camera's and with or without extenders.

Sometimes Focal actually warns me that it can't get a good consistent focus and asks me if I want to retry. IS is switched off of course.ĭuring the automatic measurements the focus is often all over the place in the lens profile graph.

I have also tried my tripod, but it doesn't seem free of vibrations.

The camera with lens is steady on a counter top on a high friction rubber mat. I have my printed target setup at around 17 meters (A3 size).

I'm also combining the lens with the 1.4x (mkII) and 2x (mk.III) extenders. Nikon has resolved this by making available corrective service for affected Z 6 and Z 7 cameras free of charge, including the cost of shipping an affected Z 6 and Z 7 camera to Nikon as well as its return, even if your Z 6 or Z 7 camera warranty has expired.I am trying to calibrate my Canon 300mm f2.8 IS Mk.I lens on both my 7dmk.II and 5Dmk.III bodies (Using Reikan Focal, version 2.0.1). We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. While Nikon has taken great measures to assure the high quality expected of Nikon products, it has come to our attention that the vibration reduction (VR) feature in some Nikon Z 6 and Z 7 cameras may not function fully.
