I have the camera on the kitchen counter (on a rubber mat) and the target is outside, making the distance total 17 meters. I'm actually doing this measurement in/outside. One thing that stands out from your replies is that more than one person is mentioning light on the target. No need then to worry about shutter shake. Line the cans up at an approximate 45 degree angle in relation to the camera line of sight (center focus point). Make a line of objects, like beer cans spaced equally apart, at the appropriate distance from camera. When using extreme settings (+/-20) you can still have values all over the place, but the others are very very close together to give an excellent fit. I use a strong daylight lamp to light the target, since I found that this to be important for consistent results, to provide larger shutter speeds to prevent the influence of the mirror getting too large. Would really like to know if this seems like a lens issue or if this is normal for using a method like Focal. During this test I also see a high spread in the focus quality results. Inside Focal you can also do a focus consistency test. The spread in these focusing points causes the curve fit to degrade from excellent/Good at the start towards Poor! What do you guys make of this? Have you got any ideas of what can cause these inconsistencies? What could be wrong with the lens to cause this? So, I'm suspecting my lens or something (a setting?) in Focal. I see this issue on both my camera's and with or without extenders.
Sometimes Focal actually warns me that it can't get a good consistent focus and asks me if I want to retry. IS is switched off of course.ĭuring the automatic measurements the focus is often all over the place in the lens profile graph.

I have also tried my tripod, but it doesn't seem free of vibrations.
The camera with lens is steady on a counter top on a high friction rubber mat. I have my printed target setup at around 17 meters (A3 size).
